When are Tooth Extractions Necessary?

Although it is the goal of our dental team to help you keep your natural teeth as long as possible, there are cases in which tooth extraction is necessary. They include:

  • When severe tooth decay cannot be treated with a dental filling, dental crown, or a root canal.
  • When wisdom teeth are impacted below the gumline and put pressure on nearby teeth, resulting in pain.
  • When advanced gum disease causes one or more teeth to become loose. This is often the result of bone loss.
  • When orthodontic treatment is required to address overcrowding, and you lack the space to ensure appropriate tooth movement.
  • When extensive facial trauma occurs (i.e., a broken tooth at the gumline) and cannot be treated with a dental crown or another form of restorative treatment.
  • When an infection spreads throughout a tooth and gum tissue and poses a risk to teeth on either side.
