What Happens During a Root Canal?

Several steps must occur when undergoing a root canal. They include:

  • Our dentists will administer local anesthesia to numb the area of your mouth receiving the root canal. This ensures that you feel no pain. A latex rubber dam is placed around the tooth to isolate it from any moisture.
  • The dentist will create a small opening in the crown of the tooth and begin to access the inner layers, including the pulp, the pulp chamber, and nearby root canals.
  • Using specialized instruments, we will clean out the canals and remove the infected pulp from its chamber. The canals will then be shaped and disinfected so that no bacteria remain.
  • We’ll fill the space previously occupied by the pulp with a biocompatible solution known as gutta-percha.
  • A filling is then applied to seal the opening of the tooth before a customized dental crown is secured over the top once it is created and ready for placement.

Benefits of Root Canal Treatment

When it comes to root canal treatment, many people assume it will cause more pain; however, this is untrue and in fact, it is known to have many essential benefits, such as:

  • Natural Tooth Preservation – Instead of extracting the tooth and looking for alternative replacement options, we can save it so that it can continue to be used as normal.
  • Beautiful Aesthetics – The dental crown that is put into place will mimic the look of natural tooth enamel, so you can expect your smile to look beautiful and healthy when finished.
  • Relief from Pain – Root canals target the source of the pain – the infection. By removing the infected pulp, you will no longer experience the type of pain you did before.

Root Canal Retreatment

If you have already received root canal treatment but do not heal properly, develop an infection, have root canals that are more complex, or suffer additional pain, you may need what is known as root canal retreatment. Our dental team can reenter the tooth to perform more extensive cleaning so that all bacteria are removed from the root canals. We’ll then reseal the tooth to prevent reinfection.
